On 9 January 2024, actor-director Mel Brooks, born in 1926, received an Honorary Oscar for his filmmaking talent. A king of satire where high- and lowbrow laughs meet, Brooks is known for treating serious matters with a hearty grin – and a strong helping of wit and respect.
As such, the Cinémathèque will be screening a selection of his works including his iconic first release The Producers, the black comedy Blazing Saddles, Young Frankenstein, and a few more besides.
Taking on Westerns, the American Dream, the history of the entire world as well as well-known myths and stories of mad scientists and monsters, Brooks picked up popular tropes and narratives, and flipped them on their head – much to everyone’s amusement.
