Since 1987, the Cinémathèque has been collaborating with the Luxembourg Philharmonic Orchestra to deliver the classics with a twist – revitalising the age-old tradition of silent cinema with live music conducted by Carl Davis.
The film in question is the 1929 adventure The Iron Mask, based on the last section of Alexandre Dumas’ novel The Vicomte of Bragelonne, which itself draws on the mysterious legend of the man in the iron mask. The story takes place in France during the reign of Louis XIII, whose wife Anne gives birth to twins in secret: one son is taken to Spain, while the other remains in France. Upon learning his true identity, the exiled prince travels to his birth country to claim the throne.
