The opera Dido and Æneas by Englishman Henry Purcell was an instant classic when it was first performed in 1689. Fearless avant-garde Belgian collective Peeping Tom has tackled this behemoth for its first opera, resulting in a tour de force − a fascinating new version of the love story of the queen of Carthage, Dido, and the Trojan hero, Æneas. Conducted by Emmanuelle Haïm, musicians from the Concert d’Astrée perform Atsushi Sakaï’s score to Dido and Æneas. Purists will be spellbound while newcomers will discover this opera as it has never been performed before.
