The new Russian director of the Bayerische Staatsoper Vladimir Jurowski presents a first-rate contemporary Franco-British programme starring French soprano Sabine Devieilhe in a performance featuring Ravel’s Valse composed in 1920 and Debussy’s Pelléas et Mélisande, dating from 1902. The performance culminates in a selection of works by English composer Benjamin Britten, including Four Sea Interludes from Peter Grimes and Les Illuminations, Op. 18. The last work is named after Rimbaud’s book of poetry, from which it was inspired and sets ten poems to music.
