Shōhei Imamura (2)

▸ Movies’ schedules and languages:

This new year begins with the second and last part of our Shōhei Imamura retrospective. Maintaining the same microscopic lens to the human experience, Cochons et Cuirassés takes place in post-war Japan, where gangs, soldiers and a young couple all fight for survival. In Zegen, a Japanese immigrant in Hong Kong tries his hand at different businesses before he builds his own empire of brothels, while Pluie noire portrays the obvious devastation as well as the more unexpected and nuanced consequences of the nuclear bomb that hit Hiroshima. Warm Water Under A Red Bridge continues with Imamura’s fascination with the world of sex, experience and comedy, and, finally, L’Anguille tells the story of a man who attempts to rebuild his life after he is released from prison for murdering his wife.
