As part of the Mémoire.s et Résilience cycle, Myriam Muller has chosen to bring to the stage Liliom, a classic by Hungarian writer Ferenc Molnár. Following her productions of Ivanov and Breaking The Waves, this cruel fable tells the story of a peddler at a fairground who, one day, falls in love with Julie, a young woman who will change his life. Myriam Muller chose this play not only for its social context but also with a view to addressing patriarchal violence, because Liliom’s descent into hell, aided by his permanent denial, is incredibly topical. This decidedly dark production by the Théâtres de la Ville is very much a tale for the present day and promises to be an early highlight of the new theatre season.
