On the occasion of the 100th birthday of photographer Pol Aschman (1921-1990), the Photothèque de la Ville de Luxembourg is hosting an exhibition at the Ratskeller in his honour. Entitled of people and streets – 100 years of Pol Aschman, the show was developed in collaboration with Christian Aschman, a photographer and the artist’s nephew. Pol Aschman was known for his street scenes, refined portraits and architectural photographs. He was long interested in the political and sociocultural events that took place in the Grand Duchy between 1949 and 1988. He was also always on the look-out for detail, allowing for a deep and careful reading of his images. His work is also distinguished by a subtle and precise gaze that underlined the stereotypes, customs and traditions of social life and society. The Pol Aschman photographic collection includes around 220,000 documents and is one of the Photothèque’s biggest and most valuable photographic archives. The latter acquired it in 1997, thanks to Dr Alex Aschman (Pol’s brother), who had inherited it.
