After Lars von Trier’s Breaking the Waves, Myriam Muller takes on Chekhov’s Ivanov. Written in 1887, this first major play by the great Russian writer was written in a fortnight and the creative urgency is felt at every turn in this story of a debt-ridden landowner. Originally written as a comedy, Chekhov rewrote it as a four-act five-scene drama, and Myriam Muller now brings the first burlesque version to the stage. Chekhov’s razor-sharp satire of Ivanov – an ordinary man concerned with peasant affairs – comes to life beautifully in this edition thanks to a fine cast.
