The eye above the well. 15/02, 19:30
schedules and practical information about the new UniPopCiné season: www.cinematheque.lu
In its 11th run, 2021 welcomes back UniPopCiné: a collaboration between the University of Luxembourg and the Cinémathèque, unravelling the many facets of film and filmmaking through discussions, extracts and seminars.
The documentary is at the heart of this year’s focus. As a genre, it is often considered to be limited to reflecting the real and robbed of creative licence. However, more often than not, it is in fact a way of seeing, feeling and reproducing reality in a way that demonstrates and communicates a perspective, a specific slice of time and space.
The season begins with Frédéric Sabouraud – critic, director and professor at Université Paris 8 – in praise of the documentary, using The Eye Above The Well, a 1988 Dutch study of the transference of knowledge, ritual and culture in Kerala, India, as a starting point. Lesson 2 is held by Laurent Le Forestier, professor of cinematic history and aesthetics, examining how documentaries, too, can weave narratives and tell stories, through the visually stunning yet fictionally liberal 1934 documentary drama Man of Aran.
