An academic session honouring women’s suffrage was held on 22 May at the Cercle Cité and attended by Her Royal Highness Princess Alexandra, Mayor of the City of Luxembourg Lydie Polfer and the minister for Equality between Women and Men Taina Bofferding. The evening was an exercise in the duty of remembering the struggles that took place to ensure equality between women and men. The speakers for the evening included Prime Minister Xavier Bettel and Dr. Birte Förster, who was guest of honour. They reviewed developments in the country’s political system and institutions that have occurred since the beginning of the 20th century. They also highlighted the work that still had to be done after the introduction of the right to vote in 1919, as women didn’t enjoy the same civil rights as their husbands until the 1970s.
