In 2016, at just 29 years of age, spirited Lithuanian conductor Mirga Gražinyte-Tyla took over the reins of the prestigious City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra. Contrary to the typical image of the “maestro”, she considers herself to be on the same level as the other members of the orchestra.
The appetite that guest pianist of the hour, Chinese musician Yuja Wang, has for rising above a score is certainly no secret; indeed, her uninhibited style, tremendous technique and unique blend of virtuosity and finesse have set audiences alight the world over, and Wang will be gracing the stage at the Philharmonie on 23 May showcasing the work of Serguei Prokofiev. The performance will incorporate elements of the composer’s Piano Concerto n°5, with which Mirga has had the great vision to combine Stravinsky’s The Firebird and Ligeti’s Concert Românesc.
