Adapting Lars von Trier’s masterpiece Breaking the Waves for the theatre was a challenge Myriam Muller wasn’t afraid to face. Produced by the Théâtres de la Ville de Luxembourg, the play tells the story of Bess, a fragile young woman who finds love in the arms of Jan. All-consuming passion turns into madness when the latter gets seriously injured on an oil rig. Breaking the Waves, a fierce ode to life and hope, is Myriam Muller’s second adaptation, following Blind Date, which had already showcased the director’s imagination to its full potential. The play will be performed for the first time on 1st February before embarking upon an extensive European tour.
